Gravis UltraSound PnP pre-installed DOS drivers for OrpheusII soundcard v5
==========================================================================

This is a convenience DOS drivers package for the UltraSound PnP portion
of the MK1869 XTREME sound card so the end user does not have to mess with
the original Gravis installation programs (which in most cases are buggy).
This package only covers the DOS aspect of GUS PnP, if you need to install
Windows 3.x drivers then you will have to use the original Gravis installer.

*** Please read the whole document which serves as a quick guide ***
*** Package made for pure DOS environment, not DOS box under win9x ***

The package assumes it is extracted in C:\ drive using a PKZip command like
this: pkunzip ultrasnd.zip c:\ -d
A directory C:\ULTRASOUND will be created in C: drive and all relevant files
will be in it.

The package includes the following:
- latest Gravis UltraSound PnP DOS drivers
- UltraSound Classic compatible patch set
- UltraSound PnP 4MB patch set
- Gravis sample midi files
- UltraMID driver

Notes:
-------

It is best to completely ignore SETUP.EXE that attempts to allocate and test
resources for the GUS PnP Interwave chip, the program is just too buggy and
unstable (this behavior is irrelevant to MK1869 XTREME , the same applies to
the original Gravis UltraSound PnP cards).

By default the Interwave chip in this package is configured to use:
Port: 240
DMA: 7
IRQ: 7

Record/Playback share the same DMA/IRQ - not only to save 2 resources but
also because the InterWave is a playback-only device on the MK1869 XTREME.
Sound inputs, Joystick, recording, SoundBlaster, MPU-401, OPL3 all are
handled by the ESS ES1869 portion of the card and the InterWave portion
only handles the Gravis UltraSound stuff (much like Gravis did with their
Gravis UltraSound Extreme card). Because of that files related to such
emulations have been removed from this package as there is no need to have
InterWave attempting to emulate a SoundBlaster or a MPU-401 interface.

If you wish to allocate new resources to InterWave then you need to manually
edit IW.INI and ULTRASOUND.BAT to reflect the desired changes.

For IW.INI you need to go to the [setup 0] section and change the
SynthBase= , IRQ1= , IRQ2= , DMA1= and DMA2= values.
For ULTRASOUND.BAT you need to change the SET ULTRASND= variable.

For most systems there will be no need to deviate from the default values,
having SB/SBPRO using 220/5/1 and UltraSound 240/7/7 are very good and
compatible settings expected by many games.

A few words about GUS PnP compatibility mode for GUS Classic games:
-------------------------------------------------------------------
Please make sure to read GAMES.TXT as it has specific game info by Gravis
themselves.
You will have to use PREPGAME.EXE to patch/update UltraSound Classic
games to add support for the UltraSound PnP card.
Other UltraSound PnP patches are available online , these can be used just
like you would use with an original Gravis UltraSound PnP board - the
OrpheusII neither improves or reduces compatibility.

Keep in mind that all games will use the 1MB classic patch set for music
playback, if a software has native support for InterWave midi playback then
the 4MB patch set will be used instead.

If a game requires UltraMID to provide GUS MIDI music (like Tyrian for example)
then just run " ULTRAMID -C " before starting the game.
